Chief Schutte began his law enforcement career in 1975 with the Jefferson County Police Department. Over the next twenty-nine years he held assignments in many areas including patrol, investigations, support units, supervision, command, and management.

Chief Schutte's first command position was with the Jefferson County Police Department's Air Patrol Unit. After being promoted to Captain he was assigned as District Commander in Adam District covering the eastern portion of Jefferson County . In his last assignment with the Jefferson County Police Department he was on the staff of

the last Jefferson County Police Department prior to merging with the Louisville Division of Police to create the Louisville Metro Police Department. Chief Schutte participated in the facilitation of the merger of these departments. In the new Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Schutte was commander of the Crimes Against Children Unit. He retired from the Louisville Metro Police Department in August, 2004 and began his career with the Shelbyville Police Department in October 2004.

Chief Schutte has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Police Administration from the University of Louisville where he graduated With Honors and also is a Dean's Scholar Graduate of the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officers Course.
